About the author

Proinsias Mac an Bheatha

Born and raised in Clontarf, I have been interested in wildlife for most of my life.

From the age of 10, when my father bought me my first pair of binoculars, I have been visiting the Bull Island to observe the wildlife there. It was birdwatching that interested me in the early years, but since then I have developed an interest in all aspects of wildlife,  particularly in the wild flowers and insects, found on the island.

Another interest I have is photography, and I have included of my own photos of the island's wildlife in this book. These photographs will help you identify the different species that can be observed on the island.

Over the years, as a teacher, I have led many educational field trips to the island. I have also brought many adult groups on tours to observe the wildlife found there.

So many people visit the island to walk and partake in sports. Many do not realise the richness of wildlife that is so close by. Therefore, I decided to write this book, in order to provide a helpful guide, for the visitor.

I hope this book, will encourage more people to take an interest in the natural richness found the Bull Island.
